Factors affecting the enzyme's reaction rates |
|
|
|
Introduction:
Enzymes play many important
roles in our body and have many industrial applications as
well. One role of enzymes in our body is digesting different
foods. For example Lactase is the enzyme in the small
intestine that digests lactose (the naturally occurring sugar in
milk), and Amylase is an enzyme that digests starch. |
|
Because of the importance of enzyme
activity in different chemical and biochemical reactions, it is
important to know the factors that affect the enzyme activity rate.

Project
description:
In this project you study the
effect of enzyme concentration, temperature and pH on the rate of enzymes activity. As
you see this is a 3 in one project. Each of the following three
questions can be the subject of a project.
- How does pH affect the activity of
the enzyme?
- How does temperature affect the
activity of the enzyme?
- How does enzyme concentration affect the rate of a reaction involving
a specific enzyme as a catalyst?
It takes about one day to complete
your experiments and record your results. You will need to perform a
chemical reaction involving enzymes and measure the rate of production.
